Paving Services in Dublin

Good paving does more than look nice. It gives you a driveway that holds up to the car, a patio you can use all year and paths you can walk on in the rain without slipping. Bad paving does the opposite: it sinks, tilts, collects puddles and starts to look tired within a few winters.

The difference is almost all in what you can’t see, the preparation underneath. We lay driveways, patios and paths for homes across Dublin, built on solid foundations with the right drainage, so they stay level and look good for years.

Paving Services We Offer

  • Driveway paving: new driveways and replacements for worn-out ones, built to take the weight of everyday parking.
  • Patios: garden patios for dining, relaxing and entertaining, from a small seating area to a full terrace.
  • Paths and steps: garden paths, side passages and steps that are safe and easy to walk on.
  • Front garden paving: neat, practical paving at the front of the house, with drainage planned in.
  • Removal of old paving: we lift the old patio, driveway or slabs, break up the base and clear it all away.

Paving Materials

The right material depends on how you’ll use the space, how much upkeep you want and your budget. Here are the options we’re asked about most:

  • Block paving: the classic driveway choice. It’s strong, flexible, easy to repair and comes in many colours and patterns. Permeable block paving lets rain drain through it.
  • Porcelain paving: a popular choice for patios. It’s hard-wearing, doesn’t soak up moisture or stains, and is easy to keep clean, which suits Irish weather.
  • Natural stone: sandstone, granite and limestone give a natural, one-of-a-kind finish. It needs a little more care and sealing than porcelain.
  • Concrete paving slabs: an affordable option for patios and paths, in a wide range of sizes and finishes.

Not sure which suits your home? Tell us what you’re after and we’ll recommend the best fit for the space and the budget.

Why the Foundations Matter

Most paving problems come from shortcuts underneath. It’s why we spend most of our time on the parts you won’t see once the job is done:

  • Proper excavation: we dig out to the right depth for the use, and deeper for driveways than for patios.
  • A compacted stone sub-base: laid in layers and compacted, so the surface doesn’t sink or wobble.
  • Correct levels and falls: a gentle slope away from the house so water runs off instead of pooling, and the finished surface sits below your damp-proof course.
  • Firm edging: edge restraints that stop the paving spreading and creeping out of line over time.
  • Neat cutting and finishing: clean lines at edges, corners, drains and manholes.

Drainage and Irish Weather

Water is the enemy of paving in Ireland. A patio that doesn’t drain well stays damp, grows algae and turns slippery. A driveway that sheds rain onto the road can cause problems for you and your neighbours. We plan the drainage in from the start by:

  • Setting falls so water moves away from the house and towards the right place
  • Using permeable paving, where it suits, so rain soaks through the surface
  • Directing run-off to lawns, beds or soakaways within your property where needed

Do I Need Planning Permission for Paving?

In most cases, no. Paving a driveway or patio is generally exempted development in Ireland, but there are a few conditions worth knowing:

  • Front gardens and driveways: the key rule is drainage. Surface water shouldn’t run onto the public road, so you’ll need a permeable surface, a soakaway, or a fall towards a lawn or planted area within your property.
  • Dropped kerbs: if you’re creating or widening a vehicle entrance onto a public road, you need separate permission from your local council.
  • Protected structures and conservation areas: these usually have extra rules, so check before you start.
  • Back gardens: patios and paths at the rear are generally fine.

Rules can vary with your property, so if you’re unsure, check with your local council. We’ll point out anything that applies before work starts.

How We Work

  1. Get in touch: send us your address, photos and a rough idea of what you want, and the size of the area.
  2. Site visit and quote: we measure up, look at levels and drainage, talk through materials and give you a clear written quote.
  3. Clearing and digging out: we remove the old surface or turf and excavate to the right depth.
  4. Building the base: we lay and compact the sub-base and set the levels and falls.
  5. Laying: the paving is laid on a level bedding layer, cut neatly to fit and edged.
  6. Jointing and finishing: joints are filled, the surface is compacted and cleaned, and the site is left tidy.

Looking After Your New Paving

  • Sweep it regularly to stop leaves and dirt building up
  • Keep gutters and downpipes clear so rain doesn’t run across the surface
  • Give it a yearly clean to remove moss and algae. Our jet and power washing service is ideal for this.
  • Top up joints if the filling wears away, and ask us whether sealing is worthwhile for your surface

How Much Does Paving Cost in Dublin?

Paving is priced per job, because every site is different. The main factors are:

  • Size: the area to be paved
  • Material: block paving, porcelain, natural stone and concrete slabs all vary in price
  • Ground conditions: slopes, poor drainage or soft ground need extra work
  • Digging out and removal: lifting old paving or breaking out concrete adds time and waste
  • Edging, steps and features: kerbs, steps, borders and drainage details
  • Access: whether materials can be delivered close to the work area

The best way to get an accurate price is to request a free quote. Send us photos and the approximate size, and we’ll give you a clear price. If the budget is tight, we can phase the work or suggest alternatives.

Why Choose Us

  • Built from the ground up: proper foundations, levels and drainage, not just a nice-looking surface.
  • Neat finish: straight lines, tight joints and clean cuts.
  • Clear, written quotes: you know the cost before we start.
  • We clear up: old paving and waste removed, and the site left tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to lay a patio or driveway?

A typical patio can take a few days, and a driveway usually takes a little longer, depending on the size, the materials and what needs digging out. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe in your quote.

What’s the best paving for Irish weather?

It depends on the job. Porcelain is very low maintenance and doesn’t hold moisture, so it suits patios. Block paving is a strong, practical choice for driveways, and permeable versions help with drainage. Natural stone looks wonderful but needs more upkeep. We’ll recommend the best fit for your garden.

Do I need a dropped kerb for a new driveway?

If you’re creating or widening a vehicle entrance over the footpath, yes, and you’ll need to apply to your local council. We can tell you what’s involved.

Can you lay paving over my existing patio or driveway?

Usually not. Laying over an old surface tends to cause problems with levels and drainage, so we recommend lifting the old surface and starting from a proper base.

Will you remove my old paving and rubble?

Yes. We can lift old paving, break out concrete and clear everything away. [Add your waste collection permit number here if you take waste away.]

How do I keep my paving from getting slippery?

Algae and moss are the usual cause. Good drainage, regular sweeping and an annual clean keep the surface safe. Porcelain and some textured finishes are also more slip-resistant.

Can you match the paving to my house and garden?

Yes. We’ll help you choose colours, patterns and finishes that suit your home. If you’d like help planning the whole space, see our garden design service.

Do I need to be at home?

Not all the time. We’ll agree access and timings in advance, and keep you updated as the work goes on.
