Hedge Trimming and Hedging Services in Dublin

A well-kept hedge is one of the best-looking things a garden can have. A neglected one is the opposite: shaggy, uneven, creeping onto the path and blocking the light. If your hedges have got away from you, we can bring them back under control.

We trim, shape and reduce hedges for homes across Dublin, from a small front hedge to a long boundary run. We cut them neatly and evenly, clear up afterwards and leave them looking sharp.

Hedging Services We Offer

  • Hedge trimming and shaping: a neat, even finish on the top and both sides, cut to a straight line.
  • Hedge reduction: overgrown hedges cut back to a manageable height and width, in stages where the species needs it.
  • Height reduction: tall boundary hedges brought down so they stop blocking light, views and paths.
  • Boundary and front hedges: tidy hedges that look good from the road and keep the pavement clear.
  • Shrubs and bushes: overgrown shrubs cut back and reshaped.
  • Clippings cleared: everything raked up and removed, so you aren’t left with a mess.

Hedges We Work On

We cut all the common Irish garden hedges, including:

  • Laurel
  • Privet
  • Leylandii and other conifers
  • Beech
  • Yew
  • Hawthorn
  • Escallonia
  • Mixed native hedges

Different hedges need different treatment. Laurel, privet, beech and yew can usually be cut back hard and will regrow from old wood. Conifers like leylandii generally won’t, so cutting into the bare brown wood leaves permanent gaps. For these, we’ll recommend a gradual approach, or tell you honestly if a hedge has gone too far to save.

When Can Hedges Be Cut in Ireland?

This is something every homeowner should know. Under the Wildlife Act, it’s illegal to cut, burn or otherwise destroy vegetation in hedges between 1 March and 31 August, to protect nesting birds. BirdWatch Ireland has stated that the ban applies to private gardens as well as farms and the countryside. There are a few limited exemptions, such as certain road safety work. Nests are also protected at any time of the year.

In practice, this means hedge cutting mostly happens from September to the end of February. We plan our work around this, and if your hedge can’t be legally cut right now, we’ll tell you and book you in for September. It’s another reason to get in touch early, as autumn is a busy time.

How Often Does a Hedge Need Cutting?

It depends on the hedge:

  • Fast growers (laurel, privet, leylandii): usually need a main cut each autumn, and sometimes a light tidy in late winter.
  • Slower hedges (yew, beech, hawthorn): often need only one cut a year.
  • Overgrown hedges: may need a heavier first cut, followed by regular maintenance so they don’t get out of hand again.

We’ll tell you what your hedge needs, and can set up a regular yearly visit if you’d like. Our lawn maintenance service can be combined with it, so one team looks after the whole garden.

How It Works

  1. Send us photos: a few pictures of the hedge, plus a rough idea of its length and height.
  2. Get a clear quote: we tell you what we’d do, when we can do it, and what it will cost.
  3. Check for nests: before we cut, we check the hedge for active nests, and we stop if we find one.
  4. Trim and shape: we cut to a clean, even line, using the right tools for the species and the height.
  5. Clear up: clippings are raked and removed, and paths and lawns left tidy.

How Much Does Hedge Trimming Cost in Dublin?

Every hedge is different, so we price each job individually. The main factors are:

  • The length, height and width of the hedge
  • The type of hedge and how overgrown it is
  • Whether it’s a trim, or a bigger reduction
  • How much waste there is to clear
  • Access, such as whether we need ladders or can reach both sides of the hedge

The quickest way to get an accurate price is to send us photos for a free quote. We’ll tell you honestly what the hedge needs.

Hedges and Your Neighbours

Most hedges sit on a boundary, so it’s worth a quick chat with your neighbour before work starts, especially if we need access to their side. If you’re not sure who owns the hedge, or who should pay for trimming it, agreeing on this up front avoids awkward conversations later.

Why Choose Us

  • Neat, even finish: straight lines and a tidy top, not a rough hack.
  • The right cut for the hedge: we know which hedges can take a hard cut and which can’t.
  • Wildlife-aware: we work within the nesting season rules and check for nests before cutting.
  • We clear up: clippings removed and the garden left clean.
  • One team for the whole garden: hedging, tree work, garden clearance, fencing and landscaping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you cut my hedge in summer?

Generally not. The Wildlife Act restricts cutting hedges from 1 March to 31 August, and it applies to private gardens too. If your hedge needs cutting in that window, we’ll tell you what’s allowed and book you in for September.

What’s the best time to cut a hedge?

For most hedges, autumn (from September) through to the end of February. Autumn is the most popular time, so booking early helps.

My hedge is huge and overgrown. Can you reduce it?

Usually, yes. Species like laurel, privet and yew can be cut back hard. Leylandii and other conifers need more care, because they don’t regrow from bare wood. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you what’s possible.

How tall can you cut a hedge?

We can work on hedges of most sizes. For very tall hedges, the price depends on the access and equipment needed. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you what’s involved.

Do you take away the clippings?

Yes. We clear all the clippings as part of the job. [Add your waste collection permit number here if you take waste away.]

Do you cut both sides and the top?

Yes. We trim the top and both sides where we can reach them. If one side is in a neighbour’s garden, we’ll need access to it, so let them know in advance.

What if you find a bird’s nest?

We stop. Active nests are protected, so we leave that section alone and let you know what can be done, and when.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily, as long as we can get to the hedge and have agreed the work. We’ll confirm timings in advance.
